At the end of 2017, an important new highway opened near the top of the world. Canada completed construction on a permanent highway between the two northernmost settlements in the Northwest Territories, Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk. Tuktoyaktuk had only been accessible for a few months of the year when the ice was frozen solid and was passable. Now with the completion of the 120-kilometer highway, the access will be year round. This will allow for more tourism in the area and greater accessibility to goods and services for the native population.

The construction of this highway was challenging. Work crews were subjected to extreme cold and wind in the winter. Because of the permafrost and the way that it changes from season to season, the construction process was complex. To provide support for the road, the construction company, E. Gruben Transport, determined that geotextiles were the answer. A geotextile was laid down to be the support for the entire length of the road before the gravel was poured. The integration between the geotextile and the earth helped provide the best conditions for a permanent highway in a harsh and rapidly changing environment.

Geotextiles are becoming more crucial to construction projects, and the market continues to grow. Global Market Insights predicts that the value of this industry will exceed $12 billion in the global market by 2024. In the United States geotextiles are gaining ground in construction and repair because the material is strong but permeable and helps prevent erosion.
