Over the past six years, water levels have been rising throughout The Great Lakes. High water levels have prompted local, state, and federal officials to approve the use of large sandbags along the shorelines where the loss of property and damage to structures and infrastructure are of grave concern. Crashing waves from high water levels are eroding many feet of beachfront, dunes, and cliffs. The water levels are not expected to abate in 2020 and may reach a new record high-level mark.

The approved sandbags are being filled with sand from clean inland sources, as bottom dredging is not authorized. These large sandbags provide much-needed protection, giving property owners time to look for a long term solution such as a permanent sea wall. This recent article from the Detroit News explains the current crisis

Belton Industries’ 4 x 2.5 fabric (as shown in the article above) is being used very successfully in large tubes being installed along distressed shorelines of The Great Lakes. This fabric is also used extensively in coastal applications where erosion is a significant threat to the property, as seen below along a North Carolina beach.
