Creating a windbreak of trees to protect the orchard, can take time, and be expensive. The alternative is utilizing a windbreak fabric, which can go up quickly and easily in most any circumstance. And, it doesn’t need water.

The usage of fabric has become commonplace in Europe, Australia, and South Africa, according to an article in Good Fruit Grower. However, “Orchardists in the United States have been slow to adopt the practice, but using them could increase returns on investment, says a Washington State tree fruit researcher,” the article stated.

Belton Industries would like to help.

Belton Windbreak Fabric

One of our products, Beltech 1547, was designed as a windbreak fabric, which has also proven to be a good shade fabric with a 53% shade factor. This black 2.2 oz/sy leno weave is designed to reduce wind speeds, protecting the orchard trees during budding, pollination, fruit growth and rest, while allowing air flow to the orchard. This product is available in 121- and 145-inch widths.

In the highest of wind situations, and for frost protection, we recommend a 3.1-ounce woven polypropylene, Beltech 2538. Designed in natural/white yarns, this fabric is still breathable, allowing air flow, but preventing wind and frost damage when growing in some of the tougher climates. Like Beltech 1547, this is available in 121- and 145-inch widths.
